A Career as a Hospital Police Officer

Xổ số Cà MauThe Department of State Hospitals includes a 24-hour law enforcement agency called the Office of Protective Services which oversees law enforcement at each of our five free-standing hospitals. Each of our hospitals are staffed with Police Officers, Investigators, and Communications Operators.

Hospital Police Officers
The Office of Protective Services is seeking individuals who will not only protect our staff but will also serve our patients with compassion for their mental illnesses. Our Hospital Police Officers (HPOs) are also called upon to assist the public in the communities that neighbor our hospital grounds.

Minimum Qualifications

AGE

EDUCATION
Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate is required, or possession of a college degree (Associate of Arts or higher) from an accredited college or university.

CITIZENSHIP
United States citizenship or a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship at the time of application.

DRIVER’S LICENSE
Must possess a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.

BACKGROUND
As a minimum requirement, a thorough background investigation must be conducted prior to a candidate’s appointment or training as a Hospital Police Officer. Additionally, must have no felony convictions and eligible to own/possess a firearm.

Hiring Process

There are 8 steps to our hiring process: Examination, Application, Background Investigation, Physical Abilities Test, Medical Examination, Psychological Examination, Eligible for Hire and the DSH/OPS Police Academy. Some of these steps may have smaller elements within them.

STEP 1

Examination

In accordance with the mandates from state and city leadership regarding large-scale events due to health concerns over the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), all HPO examinations are on hold until further notice. Updates will be provided on this bulletin as they become available. We appreciate your patience as we work to minimize new introduction of the virus and delay community spread.

Start the hiring process by the examination online. Applicants for the position of a Hospital Police Officer are given a general law enforcement written examination, which is offered four times a year. The remaining exams for 2020 are listed below:

This examination will consist of a Written Exam weighted 100%. 

Xổ số Cà Mau In order to obtain a position on the eligible list, a minimum rating of 70% must be attained.  In addition to evaluating the competitors' relative abilities as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the examination has been developed to measure relative to job demands, each competitor's knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the “KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES” section. The written test for the Hospital Police Officer consists of the following four test sections:

Examination Scope

The examination scope consists of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  1. Knowledge of basic principles and practices of law enforcement and basic arithmetic as applied in performing peace officer duties.
  2. Ability to apply sound judgment in the enforcement of hospital rules and regulations and applicable State laws necessary for the protection of persons and property.
  3. Ability to physically apprehend and control patients or law violators.
  4. Ability to remain calm and think and act quickly in an emergency.
  5. Ability to adopt an effective course of action in dealing with unusual situations.  
  6. Ability to use patience, tact, and impartiality in handling disturbances and confrontations.
  7. Ability to communicate convincingly and effectively.
  8. Ability to work closely with medical and nursing staff to resolve patient-related problems.
  9. Ability to deal effectively with patients, the public, and other law enforcement agencies.
  10. Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.  

Applicants whom pass the written examination (70% or better) are ranked by score. Veterans who pass the examination and have filed a (will also be distributed at the time of the exam) with CalHR are placed at the top of list. 

STEP 2

*PC 832 (Arrest and Control) is not needed to apply for the position but will be required within 30 days of passing the background investigation.

STEP 3

Background investigation

The background investigation process consists of a thorough background investigation into each applicant’s past and current employment, residence history, relationships, credit responsibility, criminality and fingerprint search. The investigative dimensions and OPS Standard set forth in the OPS Background Investigation Manual ensure that only qualified individuals will be considered for a position of public trust.

STEP 4

Medical Examination

This is a comprehensive physical examination conducted by licensed physicians under contract with DSH to evaluate a candidate’s overall physical health.

*Pursuant to Government Code Section 1031(f), persons successful in peace officer examinations are required to successfully pass a thorough medical screening prior to appointment date. Persons unsuccessful in the medical screening cannot be appointed as peace officers.

STEP 5

Physical Abilities Test

The Physical Abilities Test (PAT) evaluates each candidate’s strength, endurance, and agility as required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and functions expected of a Hospital Police Officer.

STEP 6

Psychological Examination

Xổ số Cà MauTo evaluate a candidate’s psychological suitability, the candidate will participate in a written Psychological Examination. This evaluation consists of a series of questions candidates respond to based upon their personal preferences. The examination is then followed by a face-to-face meeting with a Psychologist.

*Pursuant to Government Code Section 1031(f), persons successful in peace officer examinations are required to successfully pass a thorough psychological screening prior to appointment date. Persons unsuccessful in the psychological screening cannot be appointed as peace officers.

STEP 7

Eligible for Hire

Xổ số Cà MauAfter successfully completing the background investigation it gives them eligibility to be appointed as a Hospital Police Officer, if positions are available.

STEP 8

Police Academy

As a full time paid State employee, our Officers train at the DSH Police Academy.
